Zimbabwean musician visits Northridge

Gathering to celebrate the town’s birthday, the people of Agoura Hills sat, talked, ate and danced in the park, entranced by the sound of marimbas played by Zimbabwe native and well-known artist, Jacob Mafulemi.

Accompanied by dedicated hula-hoopers, the stage resonated with the sounds of Zimbabwean marimbas. The Masanga Marimba Ensemble, led by CSUN’s very own Professor Ric Alviso included several members playing drums, various marimbas, trumpet, saxophone and vocals.

Performing on the main stage of the Adobe Reyes Park on October 6th, they deviated from their usual Latin music and played traditional Zimbabwean music, encouraging audience members to clap along or dance. Featuring Mafulemi, they gave Agoura Hills a taste of authentic Zimbabwean marimba.
